A letter of recommendation (LOR) or letter of evaluation is a formal document required when applying to a school or job. The LOR verifies your academic or professional abilities and performance. Most educational programs in the United States and Canada require at least three letters of recommendation to be submitted with your application.

Because of the significant role that the LOR plays in the application process, choosing the right evaluators is very important. The evaluator should know you enough to provide positive and pertinent information about you and your performance. The letter of reference should include keywords that are often favored by admissions committees. Letters that are too short, too long, and/or vague will only hurt your application.
